Using a combination of high frequency and high voltage, these type can then create a plasma. In order for it to create a plasma, the tip f the torch should touch the metal.

But the thicker the sever cut, the messier the cut will be. Once the cut is done, you still have to clean out the edges. Because it is computer controlled the cut of a CNC plasma cutter is more precise. When you have projects that are repetitive you better have a CNC plasma cutter.
